Planting grass on uneven, weedy ground can be an exercise in futility. Follow these simple steps to ensure your new lawn thrives.
Despite the rising popularity of low-maintenance lawn alternatives, many homeowners still value the beauty of a lush, green lawn. A well-maintained lawn provides a great space for entertainment, play for children, and exercise for pets. Whether you’re establishing a new lawn or rejuvenating an existing one, this DIY project is within reach for those with average skills. However, as with most endeavors, success begins with proper preparation.
Soil Testing: Start by testing your soil. You can have a soil sample analyzed at your local county extension office for approximately $15. The test will reveal crucial information about your soil, including pH levels, soil texture, nutrient content (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium), and the presence of other minerals like calcium, iron, magnesium, and copper. This data will guide you in amending your soil properly.
Remove Existing Vegetation: Begin with a clean slate by removing existing grass, plants, and weeds. The method you choose will depend on the area’s size and plant type. For smaller areas with grass and weeds, a hoe can suffice. For larger areas, consider renting a sod cutter, typically costing around $70 per day. If you have larger plants or shrubs, decide whether to transplant them or move them to a compost pile.
Soil Preparation: Loosen the soil using a tiller (optional). Some experts recommend tilling to thoroughly mix existing soil with amendments, while others advise against it to avoid disturbing weed seeds. If your soil is exceptionally compacted, a rear tiller can help break it down to a depth of 6 to 8 inches before adding soil amendments (approximately $55 per day for rental).
Add Compost: Irrespective of the soil test results, all soils can benefit from 2 to 3 inches of well-rotted compost. You can use compost you have on hand or purchase it from a landscaping supply store. Avoid using overly fresh or “hot” compost, as it may not break down sufficiently. Expect to spend around $30 to $50 per cubic yard, depending on the type and location.
Additional Soil Amendments: Depending on your soil type, you may need to add other amendments like sand to improve soil texture and drainage. Keep in mind that soil amendments focus on the physical condition of the soil and should not be confused with fertilizers, which address nutrient levels.
Fertilize and Level: Based on your soil test results, consider applying starter fertilizer to provide your lawn with a strong start. Spread the fertilizer evenly using a spreader and then use a sturdy rake to level the soil surface. Ensure that the soil is about 1 inch below ground level, accounting for the height of the turf to be installed. Avoid any unevenness in the soil surface for a polished look.
Plant or Sow: Plant your lawn or sow grass seed promptly after completing the preparation work. The longer bare soil is exposed, the quicker weeds can establish themselves.
